Electrical signals follow a defined path through the heart, beginning at the sinoatrial node in the right upper chamber or atrium. The signal then spreads to the right and left atria, which contract and push blood to the lower chambers or ventricles.

The electrical signal also passes into the ventricles through the atrioventricular node along the tissue, separating the two lower chambers.
